Abstract
640,892. Refrigerators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 22, 1949, No. 10752. Convention date, April 23, 1948. [Class 29] In a refrigerator cabinet 1 comprising inner and outer walls 2, 3 between which is a n insulating material and which carry a breaker strip 7, a moisture-impervious flexible diaphragm 12 is mounted behind the breaker strip and the space between these two elements is filled with a resilient, compressible h e a t insulant 23 exerting a pressure on the diaphragm. To prepare a topopening cabinet, the cabinet is upended and the intermural space filled through apertures 17, 18 with insulant which may be silica or alumina aerogel or one of the aerogels described in Specification 607,426 or 607,427 The cabinet is then righted and the msulant 23, which may be spun glass, wood fibre or felt, is inserted and then the breaker strip is secured so as to put pressure in the insulant 23. If the intermural insulant settles, the insulant 23 will expand the diaphragm 12 and thus no air space is left between the walls. The diaphragm also acts as a seal presenting ingress of moisture to the insulant.
