[Class 85] A drill pipe protectcr 11 having an outer diameter less than the inner diameter of the casing 12 and made of resilient rubber or like material has formed on the outer cylindrical surface 14 cavities 15 each of which extends over a radial angle R less than the radial angle R<SP>1</SP> subtended by the bearing surfaces between the protector and the well casing and whose rim 17 lies continuously within the cylindrical surface 14. The cavities may be elongated or circular and the bore of the protector of a less diameter than the drill rod 10 with a circumferential ridge formed at each end of the bore.
