Abstract

640,515. Internal grinding. SANDOZ, V. H. C. April 16, 1947, No. 10103. Convention date, Oct. 16. [Class 60] An internal griding machine wherein the journals of the spindle carrying the grinding wheel and the grinding wheel itself are cooled by a cooling liquid, is characterized by another nozzle surrounding a sleeve in which the spindle is rotatably journalled and by means for forcing the cooling liquid through said nozzles so that the cooling liquid flows freely over and along the sleeve to the grinding wheel unconfined by tubes, ducts and the like to form around the sleeve an hydraulic cooling sheath. The grinding wheel 3, Fig. 1, is carried on a spindle 1<SP>1</SP> journalled in a sleeve 1 supported by a framework 2. Pressure water passes through a connection 5 to an annular chamber 6 and thence through the annular space around the sleeve 1 and flows along the sleeve, thus cooling the bearings for the spindle, to the grinding wheel. In a modification, Fig. 2, the coolant is supplied to a block 12 which reciprocates with the work piece 4; packings 14, 15 are provided to allow for reciprocation of the block 12 relative to the sleeve 1.
