Abstract

<PICT:0640495/III/1> <PICT:0640495/III/2> In an apparatus for determining the cetane number of a Diesel fuel, comprising a valve 10 controlling the air flow through ports 8, Fig. 2, into a surge chamber 7 connected at 24 to the intake pipe of a test engine operating on the fuel, the valve 10 being slowly rotated to close the ports 8 until the engine misfires, at which position the cetane number is read off a calibrated scale 37 attached to the valve, the control edge 40, Fig. 2, and the parts 8a of the ports are so arranged that the angular position of the valve at misfire is in linear relation to the cetane number of the fuel. The intake air flows through pipes 28 ... 31 in a temperature regulating water jacket 25 to a chamber 35 and then through the ports 8 to the chamber 7. The valve 10 is rotated by synchronous electric motor 23 on energization of a solenoid 22a forming a magnetic clutch with a plate 22b on a shaft 21 carrying a pinion 20 engaging a gearwheel 19, and it is mounted between ball-bearings 11, 12, carried respectively by a springloaded plunger 13 and a screw 16 for axial adjustment of the valve if the conditions of the test differ from those at which the apparatus was calibrated. When the solenoid 22a is de-energized, a spring 41 moves the shaft 21 so that its end 42 is engaged for manual rotation by a wheel 44. The test engine is started with the ports 8 fully open, as shown in Fig. 2, and the solenoid 22a energized to start the valve rotation. The puff of smoke in the exhaust on misfire may actuate a photo-cell to de-energize the solenoid 22a, or it may be de-energized manually to stop the rotation, the cetane number being then read off.
