Abstract

640,227. Change-speed gearing; positive clutches. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. July 31, 1947, No. 24680/46 [Class 80(ii)] In a positive clutch, having frictionallyoperated balking means which detect but do not assist synchronization, and comprising a toothed clutch member 32, having rotatably secured thereto a friction disc 33 and co-acting with an axially slidable toothed clutch member 29 having balking means in the form of a friction disc 34 maintained in light frictional contact with the disc 33 by a spring washer 40 in a casing 41 secured to the latter disc, the member 29 entrains the disc 34 through T- shaped axial lugs 36 on, but extending radially inwardly from, the disc and engaging slots 35 in the member. With the clutch disengaged, only the tails of the lugs enter the slots, lack of synchronization causing the tails to move to one or other side of the slots and block engagement of the toothed members. Reversal of torque on the disc 34 on passing through synchronization causes the lugs to float to the centre of the slots which are just wide enough to allow the heads of the lugs to enter so that the toothed members can be engaged. As shown, the clutch is applied in a change-speed gear of the kind described in Specification 640,228 to couple the input gear 11 directly to a hollow shaft 25 and so overrun a gear 17, connected to the gear 11 by an underdrive countershaft train and normally powering the shaft 25 through a free-wheel coupling (not shown).
