[Class 83 (iii)] A lathe attachment for turning spherical surfaces comprises a hollow body providing an internal chamber with external means for attachment to a lathe slide, a carrier rotatable against a face on the body and having a boss extending through a bearing in the wall of the body into the chamber, clamping means on the carrier for a cutting-tool, a worm-wheel within the chamber secured to the boss and a worm within the chamber meshing with the wormwheel and rotatable by a spindle passing outside the body, by which the tool may be moved in an arcuate path. The body portion 1 of the device may be provided with a shank 5 to be clamped in the usual lathe tool-holder or may be provided with a base-piece for attachment to the lathe in place of the cross-slide. A carrier part 2 is rotatable on the body portion and may be adapted to rotate in a horizontal or a vertical plane. The tool 4 is clamped in a holder 3 which is radially adjustable along a guide groove in the carrier for cutting spherical ends of different radii. Gauging stops 18, 19, Fig. 2, secured to adjustable rings 20, 21 respectively, arranged between the carrier and body portions, co-operate with a fixed stop 17 to limit the rotary movement' of the carrier obtained through the handle 12 and wormgearing 10, 11, Fig. 3. A number of gauge members 16 of different diameter are provided for setting the tool along its guide, other gauge blocks are provided for bringing the tool up to the axis of the work when the device is used in a horizontal position.
