Abstract

1,195,011. Finishing cylindrical surfaces. C. I. R. BRADLEY. 8 May, 1967 [7 Feb., 1966], No. 5264/66. Headings B3K and B3T. A method of machining a surface of a rotating workpiece 2 comprises bringing into contact therewith the periphery of a freely rotatable hyperboloidal cutter 3 having substantially line contact therewith. The cutter 3 is used to finish an end 2 of a bar in a lathe. The cutting teeth 7 are formed by cutting variably-spaced slots 6 in the hyperboloidal surface 5 and grinding the cutter by a tool formed and positioned in a similar manner to the workpiece 2 to be finished. The cutter is urged resiliently against the work with positive limit stops to determine the finished size. Gauging means continuously monitor the position of the cutter. Two opposed cutters may be used on pivoted arms urged together by spring or power means. In a modification, the cutter is moved tangentially to the work and the teeth have the hyperboloidal curvature offset from the cutter centre.
