Abstract

639,204. Moulds for explosive charges. OLIN INDUSTRIES, Inc. March 31, 1947, No. 8620. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1944. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] In moulding an explosive charge, a charge of pellets 15 is enclosed between open-ended coaxial polished metal cylinders 13, 14 with bronze bushes 16 at each end and subjected to pressure, in excess of the initial pressure required, sufficient to allow the locking shell of two half cylinders 10, 11 with engaging bevels 19 to be assembled on the mould, so that, on partial release of the pressure, the mould parts become firmly locked due to expansion of the charge. The detachable self-locking mould is under an initial pressure of say 200 lb. per sq. in. at 25‹ C. and is then heated, while the charge retains the same volume, to say 75‹ C. for 16 hours when the pressure increases to 3000 lb. per sq. in. The mould is allowed to cool, the resulting consolidated charge is slightly compressed to permit removal of the locking shell and is then pressed 'out of the mould. The inner cylinder may have heating or cooling fluids passed therethrough, and air may be evacuated from the mould during consolidation. Specification 473,057 (Group XXI), and U.S.A. Specification 2,160,626 are referred to.
