Abstract

1356445 Moulding refractory powders TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK 13 July 1971 [18 July 1970] 32687/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] A hot pressing process of forming a precisely dimensioned sintered body comprises pressing a first refractory powder into a first body with a non-uniform dimension along the pressing axis, covering the body with a parting agent and interfitting it with a second refractory powder body to form a composite with a uniform dimension in the pressing direction. The composite is then hot pressed in a die along the first pressing direction and then separating the first sintered body from the second. The first and second refractory powders are the same or have the same sintering and pressing properties and may be Al 2 O 3 , MgO, Si 3 N 4 or talc. The parting agents may be ZrO 2 , BN, graphite, Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , MgO. The first body A may be fitted into a corresponding cavity in body C and hot pressed in the direction of the arrows (Fig. 1). Examples are given of the production of octahedron shaped Al 2 O 3 bodies, cylinder shaped beta Al 2 O 3 crucibles and a Si 3 N 4 bolt and nut formed by hot pressing Si bodies in nitrogen.
