Abstract

639,129. Temporary roof supports. RIDGILL, E., and PEARCE, R. Feb. 4, 1947, No. 3350. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] A temporary roof support, e.g. a pit prop, of the telescopic type comprising a tubular body 1, Fig. 1, and a screw-threaded extension member 2 operated by means of a nut 4 engaging the screw-thread and bearing on the body 1, has an elongated key bar 5, Fig. 6, welded at its ends and intermediate its ends in holes 6, 7 in the body 1 and slidably engaging in a keyway 10, Fig. 9, formed in a disc 9 provided on the extension member 2 at or near its inner end. The nut 4, Fig. 2, bears against a brass washer 11 and is held by clips 15 welded to the body 1 and engaging in a groove 13, the clips also engaging notches in the washer 11 to prevent its rotation. The nut 4 has a lateral offset boss which receives a sliding bar operating handle 18. Two key bars with corresponding keyways in the disc 9 at opposite sides of the roof support may be provided. A handle may be provided on the body portion and the threads on the nut and extension member may be of Acme form and may have two starts. Specification 7851 /11, [Class 78 (iii)], is referred to.
