Abstract

638,923. Pumps. CROSSLEY BROS., Ltd., and CARTER, H. D. July 28, 1947, No. 20238. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a multi-cylinder two-stroke engine the variations in pressure in the exhaust manifold j, k act on a piston n or a diaphragm to compress air, which may be used for engine scavenging or charging, or to do other useful work. As shown, the manifold is divided and the exhaust pulses act alternately on opposite sides of the piston n which is connected to a double-acting pump piston o and a cushioning piston p which may however be replaced by springs. The pressure pulses may act on one side of a piston, or on each of a pair of balanced pistons, the opposite sides of which compress the air. The exhaust connections may be arranged so that the pistons are first acted on by the flow of exhaust and then by the pressure pulse. Specification 581,216 is referred to.
