638,407. Silencing gaseous currents. CULLUM, D. J. W. May 27,1948, No. 14321. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer for a jet engine under test comprises a sound-absorbent tunnel 3 traversed by soundabsorbing elements 5, each protected on the side facing the jet by a perforated heat resistant plate. The tunnel, which may be of brick or concrete, is lined with insulating material 4 which may be protected by a perforated metal lining. The elements 5 each comprise sound-absorbing material, e.g. rock wool, surrounded by perforated metal tubes having circular, elliptical or aero-foil cross-section, an air space preferably being left between the two. They are preferably supported on a central rod extending through an end casing and clamped, bolted or welded to angle irons fixed to the tunnel 3.
