Abstract

637,842. Aircraft runways. WALLGREN, A. G. F. Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34614. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1946. [Class 4] Aircraft runways are provided with water basins into which a landing aircraft may run and be braked. A floating aerodrome is shown in Fig. 1, comprising three runways 10, 12 and 14 connected to the shore by tracks 36. The runways are built up of square plates 16 and girders 18, 20 of reinforced.concrete, and have their lateral edges curved upwardly to form barriers. Pumps supply air to the underside of the runways to make up leakage and vent pipes 30 allow the escape of excess air. Water basins 40 are each common to two tracks and have a down slope 42, a flat base 44, an optional rise 46, overflows 52 and a water supply from pumps 47. Pipes 48 extending into deep water ensure that a supply for pumps 47 is available even when the surface water is frozen. The water height may be varied to cover the bottom of the aircraft fuselage or the basin may have zones at various levels for different types of aircraft. Retractable water-engaging flaps may be provided on the aircraft. Various modifications in the basic triangular arrangement of the runways are shown. Means for the disposal of snow may also be provided.
