Abstract

637,793. Engraving. LAZARENKO, B. R., and LAZARENKO, N. J. Sept. 24, 1946, No. 28582. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] In a method of working metals and other electro-conductive materials localized spark discharges between the work and a tool electrode disrupt particles from the work and carry them towards the tools through a liquid in which the spark occurs. The circuit is adjusted for direct current oscillatory discharge and operates by breakdown of the medium or direct contact of tool and work. Engraving and like operations are performed on hard tool steels and alloys, ferro chrome, ferro silicon, &c. and the liquid may be organic, water, salt solution with passivators to form films on the metals, or water with a kaolin suspension &c. The tool 2 of an engraving apparatus is mounted on a solenoid shaft 4 carrying a contact at one end and surrounded by an A.C. fed coil 5 which reciprocates the tool 2'to intermittently connect the circuit including the oscillatory condenser 10 to a supply contact 6 of a D.C. circuit. As an example, in a method of drilling, Fig. 3, the fluid 8 is kerosine, the electrode 2 is copper and for a steel workpiece 1 a 150 volt supply requires 8 amperes with a shunting capacity C of 200 microfarad. German Specification 465,285 and Russian Certificate of Authorship 45017/35 are referred to.
