Abstract

A cold-setting composition comprises a mixture of a liquid thioplast having terminal mercaptan groups with at least 10 per cent by weight of a monomeric organic compound containing at least two groups of the type -NCX, where X is oxygen or sulphur. In a modification a thermosetting composition is obtained by employing in place of the monomeric compound a thermally unstable compound which will yield on heating 10 per cent by weight of the composition of the monomeric compound. The liquid thioplasts with terminal mercaptan groups may be prepared according to the process of Specification 600,644. Suitable monomeric organic compounds are ethylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene-1,6-diisocyanate, phenylene-1,3-diisocyanate, chlorphenylene-2,4-diisocyanate, tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate, tolylene-2,6-diisothiocyanate, diphenyl - 2,6 - 41 - triisocyanate, ethylene diisothiocyanate, phenylene - 1,4-diisothiocyanate, phenylene - 1,3 - diisothiocyanate, and hexamethylene - 1 - isocyanate-4-isothiocyanate. Suitable thermally unstable compounds are addition compounds of polyisocyanates with diarylene amines, e.g. 4,41-diphenylene diamine or with malonic esters. Also suitable are polymeric polyisocyanates, e.g. the dimer of toluene diisocyanate. The compositions are suitable as sealing or coating compositions. They adhere well to glass and aluminium. In examples the liquid product prepared according to example 2 of Specification 600,644 is mixed with hexamethylene-1,6-diisocyanate or with toluene-2,4-diisocyanate.
