Abstract

636,004. Treating wood with liquids. PERBOHNER, S. March 17, 1947, No. 7339. [Class 140] [Also in Group XII] Wood in log &c. or briquetted waste form is impregnated with an aqueous solution without the evolution of free oxygen, of one or more oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or perchlorates, dichromates, permanganates, phosphates, or easily-reducible metal oxides introduced as a soluble salt. A moistureresistant coating is then applied, such as paint, lacquer or distemper. A nitro-cellulose lacquer, a chinawood oil varnish, and a chlorinated rubber medium are examples; a nitro-cellulose solution may include pigments or zinc or copper oxide. Or a solution of copper or other metallic naphthanate in, e.g., benzine or white spirit, may be applied by brush, drip or spray methods. A further coating comprises water glass and feebly-basic compounds such as oxides, hydroxides, carbonates or basic carbonates of zinc, calcium and magnesium. In an example, wood pieces are simmered for two hours in a hot solution of 1.5 lb. sodium nitrate per gallon of water, and after air drying coated. with a mixture of water glass, zinc oxide, calcium nitrate and water.
