Abstract

633,948. Knitting-machines. STIBBE & CO., Ltd., G., STIBBE, E. V., and BROWN, A.M. Feb. 26, 1947, No. 5587. [Class 74 (ii)] A circular machine having nib jacks for producing shaped areas of spliced fabric as described in Specifications 210,046, [Class 74 (ii)], 417,472 and 500,435, is provided with weltturning mechanism and means for selectively operating the nib jacks to cause the corresponding needles to operate with the welt instruments. The welt-turning mechanism comprises a dial having welt instruments 5 therein and a dial cam system operative upon the instruments 5. The series of nib jacks comprises two or more central jacks 3 with long butts interspersed with short butt jacks, and jacks 1 with short butts interspersed with jacks 2 having medium butts. Cams 6, 7, 11 are provided for operating the jacks, the cams 6, 11 being movable radially under pattern control; and in addition to the usual knitting cams F, radially movable cams 8, 9 are provided for action upon the needle butts 10. In forming a welt, and with the jack cams 6, 11 in their operative position to obtain a 1Î1 selection of needles, the cam 8 is moved to its innermost position at the commencement of knitting, and after knitting three-quarters of a course the cam 9 is moved inwards to its intermediate position. At the completion of the first course, cam 8 is retracted to its intermediate position, and after three-quarters of the second course has been knitted, the cam 9 is completely retracted. On completing the second course, cam 8 is again moved to its innermost position. During the knitting of the third course, alternate needles are at a low idle position and the welt instruments 5 are in action. At the termination of the fourth course the cam 8 is retracted to its intermediate position, and after a quarter of the fifth course has been knitted, the cam 8 is fully retracted and the cam 9 is moved to its innermost position and the jack cam 6 is withdrawn so that all the needles 4 knit the welt. To complete the welt by returning the loops held by the welt instruments to the needles, the cam 6 is moved into operative position and the cam 9 remains in its innermost position. The butts of the intermediate needles are lowered by the cam 8 to a position beneath the fully advanced welt instruments 5 and are raised by the cam 9 to penetrate the loops of the instruments 5, Fig. 11, the instruments being thereafter fully retracted to leave the loops on the needles.
