[Class 74 (ii)] Jacks 146 each having removable patterning butts 148 and a cam-actuated butt 152 are provided beneath the sinkers 142, and pattern controlled plungers 110 are arranged to engage the butts 148 to raise the jacks to a position in which the butts 152 can be engaged by the cam 183. The butt 152 is inclined so as to engage a correspondingly inclined surface on the cam 183 so that the jack is maintained in a raised position. The plungers 110 are slidably mounted and are spring-pressed towards the sinker jacks. Pivoted members 89 have end portions 112 engaging recesses 111 in the plungers, and are actuated by stops 90 on a pattern drum 11 to withdraw the plungers from operative position. A pattern controlled roller 125 with flattened side 126 is provided for holding all the levers 89 away from the pattern drum 11 so that all of the plungers are rendered inoperative. To permit patterning to be suppressed in part of the fabric, e.g. the foot of a stocking, the jacks 146 corresponding to the unpatterned part have butts 150, and the pattern drum 11 has a complete row of stops 90 to engage the plunger 110 corresponding to the butts 150. Alternatively, the top butt 148 may be used in place of the butt 150. In operation, the jacks 146 are moved outwardly for selection by the plungers 110 by a cam 172, Fig. 7, and maintained at the correct level by cams 174. The jacks selected by the plungers are engaged by the bevelled side of a dividing cam 180 and are moved inwardly to a position for engaging the cam 183. The cam 183 pushes the jacks and sinkers inwardly for, e.g. reverse plating. Thereafter, the jacks are engaged by a cam 184 and are moved outwardly and downwardly to join the unselected jacks.
