Abstract
632,906. Glass manufacture. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 16, 1947, No. 33153. Convention date, Dec. 18. 1946. [Class 56] An X-ray impervious glass consisting principally of silica and lead oxide is prevented from being discoloured by X-rays by the addition of cerium oxide. Silica, lead oxide, barium oxide and cerium oxide are melted with quantities of soda ash and cullet, cobalt or manganese being added as colouring matter. Suitable proportions are silica 35 per cent, lead oxide (PbO) 52 per cent, barium oxide 12 per cent, cerium oxide 1 per cent. Other proportions with the cerium content between 0.5 and 1.5 per cent are permissible. Glass of the above composition is sealable with " lime " glass, transparent to X-rays.
