Abstract

[Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] In a change-speed gear two gears are rigid with one shaft and are.engageable with two gears which are mounted on a second shaft so that they rotate relatively to the shaft when moved longitudinally, during a change of ratio both shafts being in positive engagement for a short interval of time. In one embodiment a gear 23 is freely mounted on a second shaft 1 having opposite handed helical splines 20, 21 with which are engaged splined collars 25 retained in recesses in the gear 23 by end plates 27. The end plates and the collars have holes 28, 30 in which slide the pins 35 attached to cages 34 to connect either of the collars 25 to the gear 23 by longitudinal movement of the bar 37. By this engagement the gear 23 may be accelerated or decelerated in its direction of rotation relative to the shaft as the gear is moved longitudinally thus facilitating the change of speed. In modifications the two splined portions of the shaft 1 are superimposed to reduce the overall dimensions of the gearbox, and the selector bar 37 carrying the forks 32, 33 is moved at a rate proportional to the speed of shaft 1. In the latter modification, as shown in Fig. 4, the fork 38 is carried on two shafts 51 having cam grooves 57 and rotated in opposite directions through gearing 52, 53, 54 from the shaft 1. For change of gear, a lever 63 rotates a cam 62 to depress a pin 59 against a spring 60 into the cam groove 57 thus causing longitudinal movement of the selector at a rate proportional to the shaft speed.
