Abstract

Ferrous metals are carburized by a liquid agent consisting of at least two different liquids, a major component giving a mildly carburizing atmosphere and a minor component giving a strongly carburizing atmosphere on decomposition at the carburizing temperature. The agent may consist of 98 to 80 per cent by volume of methyl alcohol and 2-20 per cent of benzene or toluene and the amounts of either may be varied during the treatment. The two components may be mixed in one container and fed to the furnace through a single tube or may be in separate containers and fed to the furnace through a single tube or two separate tubes. The atmosphere produced by decomposition of the agent may be agitated by a fan.
