Abstract

Mild steel containing up to 0.2% of carbon is heated in an atmosphere of ammonia between 450 DEG C. and 590 DEG C. to form a surface layer containing iron nitride and below it a layer containing nitrogen in solid solution, the steel then being cooled sufficiently rapidly to retain the nitrogen in solution. The nitriding atmosphere may also contain a hydrocarbon or other carbon containing gas.
