Abstract

628,395. Cable &c. drums. ABISCH, O. Aug. 13, 1946, No. 24029. [Class 99(ii)] A cable &c. drum made of metal comprises two end cheeks A. B, Fig. 1, each having a peripheral flange 1 forming a cylindrical surface on which the drum is supported when on the ground, and radial stiffeners 4 which are secured to the cheeks and to a central core C and which increase in width as they approach the core. Each cheek comprises a disc 2 and a central dished-in part 3. The cable is carried on a tube D having tongues 5 which pass through slots in the cheeks A. B. A cover E is made up of two semicircular plates to the longitudinal edges of which are fitted angle bars 61, the curved edges having angle bars 6 provided with cleats by which the cover is bolted to flanges 7 on the cheeks A. B. In a modification, Fig. 4, each side cheek is made up of an outer rim 10 of angle section, a hoop 11, and a disc 11<SP>1</SP> welded together and to the stiffeners 4. The disc 111 may be built up of four part-rings. The tube D is formed of curved plates secured to L- section bars 12 fastened to the stiffeners 4, and the angle bars 6<SP>1</SP> are on the outer surfaces of the cover plates E which are secured in position by bolts connecting the bars together.
