Abstract
627,980. Velocity-modulated tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. May 17, 1946, No. 15071. Convention date, March 25, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A velocity-modulated tube of the radialbeam, concentric resonator type is tuned by means of deformable end walls, which may simultaneously alter the width of a slot coupling the two resonant cavities. The radial beam passes from cathode K, Fig. 1, through a control grid G, through grid bars A, B associated with the buncher resonator R and grid bars M, N associated with the catcher resonator C, finally impinging on anode P, which may have a cooling jacket. Although a threaded plug T is shown in Fig. 1, according to the invention tuning is effected by deforming the flat end walls of the resonators. Instead of coupling the resonators by the loop Q, the common wall between them may have a continuous slot concentric with the axis of the device. In this arrangement, deformation of the end walls for tuning also simultaneously alters the width of this slot, and therefore the coupling, as shown in Fig. 3. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a pair of annular discs D1, D<1>1 and a further pair D2, D<1>2, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), carrying suitable potentials, which are disposed so as to focus the beam. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
