Abstract

627,653. Universal joints. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., and HATCHER, E. C. May 29, 1947, No. 14313. [Class 80 (ii)] In a quill shaft drive for generators, compressors and like auxiliary equipment on railway vehicles, the quill shaft 3, Fig. 1, carrying one gear 2 of a hypoid bevel, worm or other gear pair 2, 6 powering the auxiliary equipment is connected to the running axle 1 on either side of the gear 2 by resilient coupling elements engaging between axially spaced parts 12, 14 connected to the quill and axle respectively. The quill shaft 3 carries on ball or roller bearings a casing 4 in which the gear 6 is similarly mounted, and which is connected to the vehicle frame by a pivoted torque arm 10. As shown, flanged members 12 keyed to the ends of the quill shaft 3 co-act in pairs with flanged split rings 14 bolted, with the interposition of friction shims 16, to tapered portions of the axle 1. Rubber bushed pins 19 bolted in radial slots in the flanges of the members 12 are located in cups 18 similarly secured to the flanges of the members 14 through slots which are inclined at an angle to the radial so as to ensure that registration can be effected between the cups and pins on assembly. Modified forms of resilient coupling elements are described In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) rubber bushed pins secured in clearance holes in the flanges of the members 14 are located in cylindrical pockets formed in arcuate members attached, with the interposition of friction shims, to the flanges of the members 12. The rubber bushed members may be replaced by cylindrical rubber blocks 34, Fig. 5, bonded to metal discs 35 bolted as before to slotted flanges. Rubber blocks, which may be joined to form an annular member 37, Fig. 6, in bonded relation to the metal parts it engages, may be engaged between alternately axially outstanding metal pieces 38, 39 bolted to the flanges. Specifications 307,990 and 339,978, [both in Class 80 (ii)], are referred to.
