Abstract

626,271. Electromagnetic switches; arc rupturing. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 22, 1947, No. 23273. Convention date, March 19, 1943. [Class 38(v)] A permanent magnet 20 is supported near the contacts 11, 13 of a relay so that the field set up thereby is perpendicular to an arc between the contacts and drives the arc towards the magnet. In Fig. 2 the arc is perpendicular to the paper and situated somewhere along the line 26. It will be driven as shown by the arrows towards the centre of the magnet and after striking the magnet will split into two arcs one proceeding upwards along the support 21 and the other downwards along the bottom of the magnet, Fig. 1. In modifications, the arc is split into more sections by intermediate arcing plates.
