[Class 78 (ii)] A clamping device for coupling loads to haulage members has a pair of relatively movable clamping elements 2, 3 for the rope which are urged to grip the rope by the reaction of the coupled load to the pull of the haulage member and means whereby the clamping element 2 is held stationary while the clamping element 3 is moved to exert said grip on the rope between the two clamps and means whereby the clamp 2 is adapted to be moved away from its stationary position to allow the haulage member to be free of the grip and to permit the member to be moved from or inserted there between. As shown in Fig. 1, the hinged clamp 2 and floating clamp 3 are supported on a bracket 1. The load is applied to a haulage link 5, connected to a bell-crank lever 20 pivoted to the main frame 1 at 21. The lever has an upper part 22 which presses on a plate 16 mounted on the upper clamp 3 and bolted to the main frame by bolts passing through a slot 17 in the plate 16 so that the part 16 can be pressed downwards with the clamp 3 to grip the rope. The clamp 2 is connected to a bracket 13 hinged on the main frame by a pivot pin 9. A handle 4 for permitting movement of the lower clamp 2 to allow removal or admission of the rope between the clamps is pivoted to the bracket 13 which is kept upright by a head 29 on the lever 4 and cam 28 on the frame 1. When the handle is raised the head disengages from the cam and the bracket swings about the hinge 9, moving the clamp 2. The lever 20 carries a lug 23 in which is a set screw 24 pressing on the frame 1, operation of the screw causes the lever 20 to pivot and so causes the rope to be gripped. The device automatically releases the grip on meeting an obstruction or can be released manually or automatically by the handle.
