Abstract
Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape is made by copolymerizing in bulk, aqueous dispersion or solution 100 parts of an ethylenic monomer or monomers with from 0.1 to 1.1 parts of an organic cross-linking agent and coating the product on one or both sides of a flexible backing. Monomers specified are methyl, ethyl, butyl, n-hexyl, 2-ethyl-butyl, n-octyl, lauryl, stearyl, cyclohexyl, ethoxyethyl, butoxyethyl, ethoxyethoxy-ethyl, diethylaminoethyl, oleyl and abietyl acrylates and methacrylates; vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate and benzoate; vinyl butyl ether; N-vinyl succinamide; styrene, methyl styrene, vinyl naphthalene; methyl vinyl ketone, methyl isopropenyl ketone; dibutyl maleate, diamyl and n-hexyl fumarates; ethylene, isobutylene; vinyl and vinylidene chlorides; acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile; itaconic acid esters. Suitable cross-linking agents are the allyl and methallyl esters of succinic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, adipic, sebacic, phthalic, crotonic, acrylic, methacrylic, cinnamic, tricarballylic, silicic and boric acids; vinyl acrylate and methacrylate; glycol diacrylate and dimethacrylate; divinyl and diallyl ethers. The backing may be a film of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, aceto-butyrate or butyrate; methyl, ethyl and butyl cellulose; vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl alcohol; rubber hydrochloride; cellulose acetate laminated to regenerated cellulose; felted or woven fabrics, e.g. of cellulose acetate, nylon, glass or vinyl resins; parchmentized or impregnated paper, e.g. tissue paper. A double-coated fibrous sheet may be laminated to a non-fibrous backing. Examples describe (1) copolymerizing ethyl and 2 - ethyl - butyl acrylates with diallyl succinate in an aqueous medium comprising 2-ethyl-butyl alcohol, ammonium persulphate, sodium carbonate and an alcohol sulphate, coagulating the copolymer by addition of aqueous barium chloride solution, dissolving in heptane and ethyl alcohol and spreading on regenerated cellulose film; (12) copolymerizing vinyl butyrate and di-(2-ethylbutyl) ethylene difumarate in an aqueous medium containing polyvinyl alcohol, sodium bicarbonate and benzoyl peroxide, filtering off the copolymer, dissolving in toluene and coating the solution on regenerated cellulose film.
