Abstract

624,530. Electric motors. SCOPHONY, Ltd., WIKKENHAUSER, G., WALOFF, D. W., and TOWNSHEND, J. H. Jan. 30, 1947, No. 2952. [Class 35] A gyratory motor operated by voltage impulses has a non-rotatable armature moved in two quadrature directions successively by a pair of electromagnets energized in sequence, or restoring means being provided to complete one cycle of gyration in response to two or more impulses. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, a magnetic armature 1 is supported for gyration on a diaphram 2 and drawn in sequence against the action of a spring 10 or of the diaphram itself by electromagnets 6, 7. The armature 1 carries a gear 4 which engages an internallytoothed wheel 5, thus driving it round. The electromagnets are energized by coils 8, 9, fed with impulses from a switch 12, a condenser 13 being connected across the coil 8 to delay its action and produce a gyration of the armature. In a modification (not shown), the armature having internal teeth is caused to gyrate by a pair of U-shaped electromagnets and drives an externally-toothed gear supported for rotation only. In a further modification, Fig. 5, a tubular armature 21, which carries a gear 4 at one end, is magnetized by a coil 22 and gyrates about a supporting diaphram at its centre under the influence of electromagnets 6a, 7a, 6b, 7b. Condenser and switching circuits to produce the pulses in sequence are also described and it is stated that shaded poles may be used to produce this effect, and that more than two sets of electromagnets may be used.
