<PICT:0624377/III/1> <PICT:0624377/III/2> <PICT:0624377/III/3> <PICT:0624377/III/4> <PICT:0624377/III/5> <PICT:0624377/III/6> <PICT:0624377/III/7> A machine for applying facings to building blocks and the like comprises means for applying the facing, an input conveyer to carry blocks through the applying means in end to end abutting relationship and a driven roller, belt or chain above this conveyer to hold the blocks to it. In a modification, the roller is replaced by, or the machine incorporates in addition, a second conveyer to carry away the faced blocks, this conveyer being driven at a greater speed than the first so as to separate each block from the succeeding one. Referring to the drawings, a conveyer 14 leads in blocks B to conveyer 15 which carries them with the help of roller mechanism 13 through the facing portion 11 and 12 of the machine, after which they are removed by conveyer 16. Belt 14 is driven by pulley-wheel 20 mounted on a driving shaft 21 while the chains 22 of conveyer 15 are driven by wheels 24 concentric with and on shaft 21 carrying pulley 20, but driven at a different speed. A similar arrangement is used for belts 15 and 16 on shaft 25. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for this differential driving mechanism. Chain-wheels 24 are mounted on shaft 21, but two pulleys 20a and 20b carrying belt 14 are mounted on sleeve 20c freely rotatable on shaft 21. Sprocket-wheel 20d is driven by chain 20e from driving shaft 20f which may carry a slipping clutch device 20h. The feeding roller mechanism 13 (Fig. 5) comprises two rollers 36 mounted on shaft 37 supported in bearings 38 on arm 39 pivotally supported on shaft 40 fitted to frame of machine. Adjustable springs 41 urge rollers 36 into engagement with blocks B. Shaft 37 is driven by pulley-wheels 42 and 43 and chain 44 from driven shaft 40. The blocks are held on the conveyers by guide rails 18 and 19. The facing material is applied from hopper 11 containing an agitator 29 driven on shaft 30, a pack roller 31 driven on shaft 32 and an adjustable finishing knife 33 to level off the facing. Near the extreme output end, spring-loaded scrapers remove surplus facing material. In an alternative arrangement the block facings are separated by a vertically reciprocating knife operating beyond the hopper (Figs. 7 to 9). The knife 50 is mounted on carriage 51 running in inclined track 52. Spring-loaded hinges 53 on carriage 51 engage cavities of hollow blocks B and hence movement of blocks draws knife 50 down to sever facing. Then pivoted detents 54 are raised by cams 55 releasing fingers 53 when carriage moves back by action of spring 56 until fingers 53 engage cams 57 which re-insert them in next hollow block. The machine may be used for facing blocks prepared according to Specification 595,232, [Group X].
