[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 31, 1946] [Class 52 (ii)] An invalid's bed is provided with a section having an opening into which a chamber may be raised from a normally lowered position beneath the bed, the chamber being of the flushable type and provided with connections for water supply and drainage which connections permit of the raising and lowering of the chamber. As shown the bed surface comprises a main portion 12 arranged to move laterally on rails so that the patient may be moved on to a wagon or the like 78 for transference to another place and a secondary portion 17 which is articulated into three parts 18, 19, 20 which may be manipulated to move the patient into a more or less sitting position by racks 57, 58 and pinions driven from electric motors 65, 93, the part 19 being provided with the chamber opening having a cover 27 pivoted to the frame and having links 28 which operate to lift the cover 27 as the chamber 25 is moved into the opening. The chamber is provided with a water flushing flexible pipe 34 connected to the water inlet 35 and with a drainage pipe 31 connected to the sewer outlet 32. The chamber 25 is carried by arms 36 to which it is pivoted at 37 to permit itself to accommodate itself to the opening. The arms 36 are pivoted to a bracket mounted on a vertical axis and are raised and lowered by means of chains 47 connected at one end to a nut 43 on a vertical screwed shaft 42 operated from a motor 46. By this means the chamber may be raised and lowered into and from operation position and also, in lowered position, swung outwardly from under the bed for external use. A bar 67 carried by arms 68, 69 pivoted to the frame at 70 is movable into desired position by screwed shaft 89 and crank 86 so that the patient may be enabled to move himself from and on to the main portion 12 of the bed surface as desired. A wash bowl 95 normally positioned under the bed is, by gearing 104, 105 arms 103 and connections 96, 97 adapted to be swung outwardly from under the bed, raised and then swung inwardly into operative position above the bed, the bowl 95 being provided with a tray 111 which may be swung away to uncover the bowl when use of the latter is desired. Water and drain connections are provided for the bowl. A heater 117 is provided, the heated gases rising between the surfaces 12,17.
