Abstract

622,147. Universal joints. BOOLE, R., and RUBBER BONDERS, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1946, No. 37719. [Class 80 (ii)] In a flexible shaft coupling, three units 1, 2 and 3 each comprising a pair of plates 4, 5 bonded to an intermediate rubber layer 6 are connected by axial sleeves 12 which alternately connect the outer plate 4 of an outer unit to the inner plate of the other outer unit and the adjacent plate of the inner unit. In each plate elongated apertures 7 and holes 10 are arranged alternately on a common pitch circle. The ends of each sleeve 12 are shouldered to form spigots 13 which engage the holes 10 in the plates and are provided with lugs 14: At one end, screws 15 connect the plates to the lugs 14 and at the other end a nut 17 is connected to adjacent plates and lugs 14 by bolts 16. Bolts 19 in shaft flanges 18 extend through the sleeves 12 and engage the nuts 17. In a modification the sleeves are internally threaded to receive the bolts 19. Two or more units may be used to form a coupling.
