Abstract

<PICT:0621772/IV (b)/1> Apparatus for effecting the methane fermentation of manure and similar substances as in the parent Specification, is characterized by the provision of a trough in the fermentation vat to form the liquid seal, said trough being spaced from the lateral wall of the vat. The trough 3 forms a liquid seal at the lower edge of the dome 2, the outer wall preferably being higher than the inner which is immersed, at least upon commencing operation, in liquid, whereby escape of gas at the bottom of the same is prevented. Manure may be compressed in the vat and subsequent swelling during fermentation is possible while permitting free movement of the dome. Air may be admitted under pressure from pipe 4 beneath plate 5, and gases collected in pipe 6. Liquid is withdrawn by syphon 7, and charging effected through manhole 8. Fermentation occurs in three stages: (1) aerobic, breaking down toxic materials, (2) anaerobic, breaking down proteins, and (3) anaerobic methane fermentation of cellulose.
