Abstract

<PICT:0590450/III/1> The improvement in a gas-generator of the type comprising a reaction chamber adapted to the contacting of a gaseous material with a solid, comprises a vented discharge chamber contiguous to and of larger volume than the reaction chamber, and a gas impervious disc separating the two chambers, said disc being of sufficient strength to withstand normal operating pressures but adapted to be readily ruptured by an abnormally high pressure in the reaction chamber. As shown a reaction chamber 1, which may be lined with glass or stoneware 5 adhesively attached thereto, is mounted on a discharge chamber 4, and is provided at its lower end with a perforated supporting screen or grid 13 which may be inclined to the horizontal, and a gas inlet 15, and is hermetically sealed and partitioned from the discharge chamber 4 by a disc 16 which has an area substantially coextensive with the cross sectional area of the reaction chamber. A closure member 17 which supports disc 16 and screen 13 is removably fastened to a hinged member 18 about which the entire closure member may be swung downwardly. An effluent gas line 10 leads from the top of chamber 1 to an expansion chamber 11 into which it extends downwardly to a point beneath a gas outlet 12. The generator may be used for producing chlorine dioxide by passing a mixture of chlorine and air into the reaction chamber containing a solid chlorite, e.g., sodium or calcium chlorite. Specification 564,162 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the charging of the reaction chamber with a liquid reactant. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
