[Class 131] A curling rod for cold permanent waving comprises spaced end members 13, 14, bars 15 connecting the end members to provide a cylindrical cage-like body 11 about which the hair is to be wound, and a clamping strip 25 for holding the curl in position. A detachable holder 12 comprising a handle 19 and a bar 17 embedded in the handle is provided, an axial stem from the end member 13 engaging in a socket in the handle 19. The bar 17 passes through a slot 22 in the member 13 and engages a recess in the member 14. The tip of the hair lock is clamped to the bar 15 by the pivoted arm 20 and after the hair has been wound on the body 11 the holder and the bar 17 are removed to loosen the coiled hair which is prevented from unwinding by the extensible clamping strip 25, of which the apertured end 26 is secured by the boss 27 and the slot 29 is engaged with the axial stem from which the handle has been removed. In a modification one of the bars 15 is mounted in a siot in each of the end members the slot having a radial and a circumferential portion so that after winding the hair the rod may be displaced inwardly to increase the loosening of the hair resulting from the withdrawal of the rod 17. In a further modification the connecting bars 15 are diametrically opposed and the clamp is T-shaped the, cross-piece being pivotally mounted between the bars 15.
