Abstract

620,807. Matches; pyrotechnic compositions. RINGER, F. Jan. 24, 1947, No. 2351. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1946. [Class 50] [Also in Group XXI] A combustible composition which can be repeatedly ignited by friction on a suitable surface, has an organic base mass comprising an absorbent igniting material containing an oxygen carrier and a thermoplastic in intimate mixture therewith to feed and control the flame. The igniting material may consist of substantially pure cellulose mixed with an oxygen carrier, whilst the thermoplastic may be a cellulose derivative such as ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate or esters or methacrylic and acrylic resins, or mixtures of any of these substances, which are all soluble in an organic solvent and which when mixed with pure cellulose in certain proportions do not melt when heated. To increase frictional sensitivity of the composition, substances such as glass powder, pumice or quartz meal may be added, whilst to reduce its rate of combustion, retardants such as ammonium bicarbonate may also be added. In one example of the composition which is easily ignitable on a friction surface rich in phosphorous, 5.5 grams of potassium chlorate, 3.5 grams of alpha cellulose, 2.0 grams of ammonium bicarbonate and 1.5 grams of powdered glass all in pulverized form are added to 4.0 grams of methyl methacrylate dissolved in 20 c.c.s. of acetone and the whole kneaded into a homogenous mass, which may then be formed into plates, extruded into rods or moulded into various other shapes, the solvent evaporating and leaving a substance of a plastic like nature. Salts of copper, cobalt and the like may be introduc:d into the composition to create coloured flames.
