Abstract
619,481. Machines with permanent magnets. VAUGHAN, R. C., and ROTHEROE, J. R. Dec. 12, 1946, No. 36741. [Class 35] The armature of a miniature electric motor is wound in a number of coils each encircling the field magnet around which it is arranged to rotate. A thin shaft 3 which is kept under tension to increase its rigidity carries the stationary magnet 1 and the non-magnetic cylindrical former 5 on which the coils are wound and which may be of cardboard &c., is supported by non-magnetic end plates 4 carried on sleeves 4<SP>1</SP> freely rotatable on the stationary shaft. The commutator is engaged by wire brushes 18 and consists of strips of brass 9 secured at their ends by insulating washers 10 whilst the drive is taken from a pinion 12, freely rotatable on the shaft 3 and driven by arms 13 engaging slots 14 in the armature. The motor is covered by a soft iron casing 15 to which the ends of the shaft are bent over at 20, 23 to enable a tension to be produced in the shaft by a nut 24 and sleeve 21. The Specification also describes a modification in which the drive is taken directly from a shaft rotating with the armature, the magnet being supported by a stationary shaft on which the commutator rotates as before.
