Abstract

900,852. Induction motors. HOOVER Ltd. March 20, 1959 [Aug. 5, 1958], No. 25121/58. Class 35. A single-phase induction motor 10 has a choke 40 surrounding motor shaft 13, and connected to a switch in the motor circuit to enable the motor to be run at two speeds. The stator is of the split-phase capacitor-run type, disclosed in Specification 796,099. Choke 40 is held in position about the shaft 13 by a mild steel cover 41 of L-section fitting over it to form part of its magnetic circuit which is completed by the adjacent part of the motor casing. Cover 41 has four teeth 42 held under tongues 43 struck out from the casing, the cover being released by rotation. In a modification the coil is of a larger diameter, being secured to the casing by a ring of U-shaped cross-section (Fig. 5, not shown). In a further modification the choke is fixed to an end of the main windings by adhesive tape, a ring of insulating material being placed between choke and windings. Without the choke in circuit the motor runs at a relatively high speed and when the choke is switched in the speed is reduced.
