Abstract

618,224. De-icing aircraft. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., MARCHANT, F. C. I., and BELL, J. E. March 18, 1947, No. 7506. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVI] The formation of ice on the wings and air intakes of a gas turbine propelled aircraft is reduced or prevented by discharging hot gas from a combustion chamber separate from that of the engine into the air flowing through the intake or over the wind, said combustion chamber being fed with air taken from the compressor of the engine. Hot gases from the combustion chamber 18 are conveyed through a pipe 37 to a hollow elliptical manifold 38 which defines the mouth of the air intake duct 15. The inner surface of the manifold 38 is provided with a plurality of jets 39 in the form of long narrow slits. Air is supplied to the combustion chamber 18 by a pipe 19 from the axial flow compressor 8 and is regulated by a valve 20 controlled by a lever 22. Fuel is supplied by a pump 23 which is driven by a motor 24, the speed of which is controlled by a variable resistance 26 adjusted by a control lever 35. When applied to a power plant comprising two or more engines, a separate combustion chamber is provided for each engine and these are interconnected so that in the event of breakdown of one engine, the intakes associated with it may be heated by the combustion chamber of another.
