A sewing-machine lower structure having an approximately U-shaped plan comprises a cylindrical work arm 1c unitary with a base B of open-bottom box-like form and a bracket-arm A is secured to the base. Work-supports. To adapt the machine for flat sewing a plate 75 is attached to the lower structure by a clamp 78 and dowel pins 77. Feed by dogs.' A feed bar 30 carrying dogs 29 is slidingly fulcrumed at 31. Horizontal and vertical movements are imparted to the dogs by linkages actuated by the main shaft. A lever 36 oscillated by a cam on the shaft is pivoted to an arm 38 on a rocker 39 carrying a second arm 46. The arm 46 is connected by a link 47 to an arm 49 on a rocker 50. An arm 52 on the rocker 50 carries a stud 53 engaging a slot 54 in the feed bar to give horizontal movements to the dogs. An eccentric on the main shaft reciprocates a pitman 57 pivoted to an arm 59 on a rocker 60 carrying a second arm 62 connected by a link 64 to an arm 66. The arm 66 is carried by a rocker 67 carrying an arm 71 having a stud 72 engaging a slot 73 in the feed bar to give vertical move-. ments to the dogs. Specification 409,158 is referred to.
