616,847. Casting processes. FERRO ENGINEERING CO. Sept. 13, 1946, No. 27548. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1945. [Class 83 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] A cover for solidifying metal castings, particularly for feeders, risers, and ingot sinkheads, comprises an insulating slab 18 having, on its under surface, material 20 which is disintegrated by heat so that it falls on the casting I and follows the shrinkage, Fig. 3. The cover may also have an upper layer 19 of insulating material preferably containing vermiculite or like material permanently expanded by heat. The layer 18 may comprise sand, cinders, or other filler, asbestos or like fibres, and clay, cement, sodium silicate, &c. The layer 19 may contain a combustible or non-combustible filler and a bonding agent. The layer 20 may comprise slag, rock wool, sand or ashes, including some combustible or exothermic material, and be bonded with pitch, oil, flour, or glue.
