[Class 138(ii)] An electric iron comprises a sole plate 1, Fig. 1, supporting a cover 2 containing a water reservoir 3 and between them a steam-generating chamber 4 and a steamgenerating chamber 6 with an electric heating element 27 between them, manual pumping means 17 being provided to supply water from the reservoir through a non-return valve 18 to the steam-generating chamber, and the steam passing out through orifices 7 in the sole plate to the articles being pressed. The steam-distributing chamber 6 is in contact with the sole plate 1 and has holes 8 which are aligned with the hole 7 in the sole plate. It is connected by the short pipe 5 to the steam-generating chamber 4 which is separated from the reservoir 3 by asbestos packing 28a. The reservoir 3 has an outlet pipe 10 which is fitted with a filter 11, the pipe extending to a rubber bulb 17 through a ball valve 12, Fig. 3, in the handle 9. The other end of the rubber bulb 17 is connected to the steam-generating chambers through a non-return ballvalve 18, a union 24 and a pipe 23, which passes through a watertight sleeve 25 in the reservoir 3. The rubber bulb 17 protrudes through an opening in the handle 9 and is covered by a movable thrust plate 26, depression of which squeezes the bulb and forces water into the steamgenerating chamber 4 by opening the valve 18. Releasing the bulb causes water to be drawn into it through valve 12, ballvalve 18 closing under the action of its spring 22. The water reservoir 3 is connected to the sole plate 1 by flanges 2a and has apertures 2c which communicate with transverse tunnels 29 in the asbestos packing 28a to keep the water reservoir cool.
