Abstract

A compound metal article such as a bearing comprises a layer of aluminium upon which is electrically deposited a layer of iron subsequently soldered to a backing of steel. The aluminium or aluminium alloy sheet is cleaned with pumice and then dipped into a boiling solution of 2.5 grams per litre chromic oxide and 90 c.c. per litre sulphuric acid. It is rinsed and coated with oxide by immersion in a boiling solution of sodium carbonate and potassium dichromate in the proportion of .3 to 1. It is again rinsed and then dipped in a solution of nitric acid. The aluminium is then electroplated with iron in a bath of ferrous chloride and calcium chloride. The steel backing is then bonded to the aluminium by soldering or brazing. A foil of silver solder may then be interposed between the steel and the iron deposit and the parts united and shaped by heat and pressure in a single operation.
