Abstract

614,726. Bending and tempering glass sheets. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., BIRD, G. W. T., and DENNETT, J. July 22, 1946, No. 21849. [Class 56] An apparatus for bending and tempering a glass sheet 4 at the same position comprises two frames 8 carrying shaping elements 7 projecting, horizontally in the form shown, therefrom. The elements 7 of one frame are complementary to those of the other and are profiled to the shape to be imparted to the sheet. After the sheet has been heated to near its softening temperature the frames are moved inwardly so that the elements 7 engage and shape the sheet, the frames then being caused to recede from the sheet. During movement of the frames the elements 7 pass through gaps or depressions between the jet tubes 5 of quenching grids 1 and after the elements 7 have been withdrawn from the sheet, quenching fluid is supplied to the jets and the grids may be reciprocated in their own planes or caused to traverse a closed circuit. The fluid supply to the jets may be controlled by a valve opened by the return movement of the frames 8 and the reciprocating or circuitous movement of the jet grids may also be initiated by movement of the shaping elements. The movement of the grids may be stopped by a time switch which may also cut off the fluid supply to the jets. The shaping elements may be independently adjustably mounted on the frames 8.
