586,497. Toughening glass. TILLYER, A., and BRITISH INDESTRUCTO GLASS, Ltd. Nov. 23, 1944, No. 23335. [Class 56] In the toughening of glass sheets by directing jets of cold fluid on to the surfaces of the heated sheets from opposite sides, the jets are arranged to be moved bodily relatively to the sheets about axes parallel with the faces of the sheets. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the frames 2, 3 carrying the jet tubes 4 are rotated by crank pins 7 about the axes A. In another form the jet tubes are oscillated about their own axes in addition to being moved bodily by the movement of the frames in which they are carried. In a third form the tubes are replaced by perforated boxes.
