Abstract

613,312. Pipe couplings. THOMAS, P. E., and STERLING INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 18, 1946, No. 18277. [Class 99 (i)] In a self-sealing pipe coupling of the spigot- and-socket type, wherein, on coupling, a fixed valve part of one member displaces a movable valve part of the other member so as to open. the pipes to fluid flow, and on uncoupling, each member is automatically sealed against outlet of fluid, the predominating, material of the coupling is a light metal or light metal alloy, while one of the co-operating valve parts is made of iron, steel, bronze or other hard metal heavier than the said light metal or alloy. Fig. 1 shows two members A and B coupled together by a nut C. Member A has a movable seating formed by a ring 24 in sealed slidable relation with the body part 1a of the member, and a fixed valve part 16 attached to the member A by the spider 15. Member B has a movable valve part 9 and fixed seatings 3, 4. The assembled coupling is shown wherein the ring 24 has been displaced by the action of the seating 3 of member B against the spring 23 which normally holds the ring 24 against the seat 17 of the valve part 16. Valve part 9' is normally held against the seating 3 of member B through the intermediary of a resilient ring 11, but in the coupled: position shown it is displaced against the action of the spring 14 by the pressure of valve part 16 of member A on a metal seating ring 12 attached to the resilient ring 11 and thus to the valve part 9. This part 9 is carried on a spindle 7 slidable in a tube 6 attached to the member B by a spider 5. When the nut C is unscrewed, the parts are automatically restored to closed positions by means of the springs. Preferably, the ring 24 is made of the hard, heavy metal so that it can be machined to give an accurate seating surface resistant to wear. The invention is described as being applicable to the couplings of Specifications 585,038 and 591,743.
