Abstract

613,274. Proofing textile materials against bacteria, insects, and water. HIGGINS, E. B. June 14, 1946, No. 17976. [Class 140] Textile material is proofed against insects and bacteria by the application to the material of an aqueous emulsion of a higher fatty acid ester of a chlorinated hydroxybenzene. The higher fatty acids are those containing at least seven carbon atoms, for example, lauric, stearic, capric or oleic acids. The specified chlorinated hydroxybenzene is pentachlorphenol. The emulsion may be applied in acid, alkaline, or neutral solution and a neutral electrolyte incorporated with the emulsion. Waterproofing agents may be included in the emulsions. In acid emulsions positively - charged aqueous waterproofing emulsions such as described in Specification 380,076 may be added whilst in alkaline emulsions a soap or a soap and wax may be incorporated and the textile material aftertreated with an aluminium salt. The textile material may be composed of cellulosic fibres such as cotton or regenerated cellulose or animal protein fibres.
