Abstract

An aminobenzenesulphonamido-halopyrazine is prepared by heating a mixture of an aminobenzenesulphonamide and a polyhalopyrazine, preferably in presence of an acid-binding substance such as an alkali carbonate, and preferably within the temperature range of 125-160 DEG C. Examples are given of the preparation of 2 - sulphanilamido - 3 - chloropyrazine, 2 - sulphanilamido - 5 - chloropyrazine, 2 - sulphanilamido-6-chloropyrazine, and 2-metanilamido-5-chloropyrazine. Dichloropyrazines are prepared by vaporizing an aqueous solution of pyrazine, mixing with chlorine and heating in a glass or stainless steel tube for 2-3 seconds at 400-500 DEG C. The fraction of the oily product boiling between 94 DEG and 107 DEG C. at 50 mm. pressure contains the 2,3-, 2,5- and 2,6-dichloropyrazines, which may then be separated by fractional crystallization by cooling.
