Abstract

612,306. Lathes. CONE AUTOMATIC MACHINE CO., Inc. May 4, 1944, No. 8459. Convention date, May 6, 1943. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe comprises a plurality of work spindles arranged concentrically around an indexing work spindle carrier and a plurality of tool supports, each arranged for movement to and from the axis of the work under the control of individual cam means carried by one or more rocking shafts arranged transversely of the work spindle axis, and means for rocking the said shafts. A central shaft 5 drives the work spindles 3, Fig. 6, through gearing (not shown) and is itself driven in synchronism with an overhead cam shaft 15. A sleeve 10 on the shaft 5 supports a tool-carrying slide 16 adapted to be moved along the sleeve by means of cams on the shaft 15. Through front and rear frame members 20, 21 are bores within which cylindrical tool carriers 22 are slidably mounted, three at the front and four at the rear. At the forward top position is a cutting-off tool 26 and a retractable stock stop 27. The tool 26 is carried by an inclined slide 28 operable by a rocker-arm 30 from cams 34 on the shaft 15. The stop 27 is secured to the end of the slide bar 40 axially slidable in a guide 41, the bar having a rack engaging an elongated gear portion 47 on a shaft 45 rocked by a cam 450 on the cam shaft 15. As the' guide 41 is inclined away from the perpendicular to the sleeve 10 and spindles 3, the withdrawing movement of the stop 27 has a component in the axial direction of the work. Wear between the tool carriers 22 and their ways is taken up by means of wedges or keys 51, Fig. 10, projecting through the frame and into slots formed in the carriers. Slight angular adjustment of the keys is provided by screws 53, whilst wear is taken up by fitting shims 58 of reduced thickness. At the opposite side each carrier is recessed to receive a rack 60 by which it is operated from a shaft 115 by means of cams operating on a rocker arm having teeth 105 meshing with the rack. 'Adjustable stop screws 70 on the rack co-operate with stops 71 on a movable selector slide 72 to determine the limit of movement of the tool carrier. The rack is adjustable relatively to the tool carrier by means of a screwed sleeve 80, Fig. 7, and locking bolt 93, both operable by a wrench 86. Slides 72 are positioned by arms 73, Fig. 1, secured to a rack shaft 74 movable by adjustable screws projecting from the spindle carrier 1. Shafts 115 extend vertically at each side of the machine and at their upper ends carry pinions 125 meshing with racks 126 which are moved by means of cams on the shaft 15. The cams controlling the feed of the individual tool carriers are mounted by screws 111 on members 112 secured to the rock shafts 115. Each tool 65 has at its base a dovetail projection 150 engaging in a slot in a carrier 151 and is adjusted along the slot by means of a screw having a shoulder 153 engaging in any one of a number of cross slots 154 in the tool. The carrier 151 is dovetailed within a block 161 and traversed by a screw 155. A boss 165 on the block 161 is journalled in the end of the carrier 22 and the block 161 is angularly adjustable about this boss by means of clamping screws 170 engaging a boss 172 projecting eccentrically from the inner end of the tool support 22. In a modified form, the tool carriers 22 are of rectangular section.
