Abstract

610,255. Milling-cutters. KNOWLES, R W. April 2, 1946, No. 10219. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A rotary tool for cutting wood and materials including metals capable of being cut similarly to wood, has a substantially centrally located spiral fluted cutter 1 beyond which at 2 and 3 it is smooth, the one end being intended to engage 'with a machine head and the other in a follower at the opposite side of the work just below the machine table level. One or both ends 2, 3 may be tapered as shown, and there may be more than one spiral flute, whilst no land is provided on the cutting edges. The top end 2 is gripped in the machine head and a jig guide pin member may encircle the tool at the top end of the flute, whilst the lower end is received in a housing provided with an antifriction bearing such as a ball-race.
